Garni and Geghard
Garni and Geghard form one of the easiest routes for a short trip from Yerevan. The journey combines the Charents Arch viewpoint, the ancient Garni Temple, the basalt columns of the Symphony of Stones and the rock-cut Geghard Monastery.

All the main stops are close together in Kotayk Province. The route usually takes 4–6 hours, but if you plan to walk through Garni Gorge and stop for lunch, allow most of the day.
How to Plan the Garni–Geghard Route
From Yerevan, the route is easiest to follow in this order:
- Charents Arch — a 10–15 minute photo stop with views of Mount Ararat.
- Garni Temple — allow around 45–60 minutes to explore the complex and the viewpoint over the gorge.
- Symphony of Stones — approximately 40–60 minutes, including the descent into Garni Gorge.
- Geghard Monastery — about one hour to see the main church and the rock-cut chambers.
Without the Symphony of Stones, the trip takes around 4–5 hours. If you include the gorge walk and a lunch stop, allow approximately 5–6 hours.
How to Get There from Yerevan
Garni village is approximately 30 km from central Yerevan, and the drive usually takes 35–40 minutes. Geghard Monastery is another 10 km beyond Garni Temple, or about 15 minutes by car.
Public transport can take you to Garni village, but it does not cover every stop on the route. Additional taxis will be needed for Charents Arch, the Symphony of Stones and Geghard. For the full route, travelling by car or with a driver is the most practical option.
Best Time to Visit Garni and Geghard
The most comfortable periods for this route are April to June and September to October. The landscape around Garni turns green in spring, while autumn brings cooler temperatures for walking through the gorges.
In July and August, it is better to start in the morning because the open area around Garni Temple and the descent to the Symphony of Stones can become hot during the day. The route is also accessible in winter, but roads, steps and walking paths may be slippery after snow.
What to Know Before You Go
- Wear comfortable shoes for the descent to the Symphony of Stones. In summer, also bring water and a hat.
- Admission to Garni Temple and the Symphony of Stones is paid, while entry to Geghard Monastery is free. Check current ticket prices before travelling.
- Geghard is an active monastery, so speak quietly inside and wear clothing suitable for a religious site.
- The route is busier at weekends. For a quieter visit, leave Yerevan in the morning.
