Waterfalls of Armenia

Armenia’s mountain landscape holds dozens of waterfalls, from the 68-metre “Mermaid’s Hair” cascade at the resort of Jermuk to the high-altitude Gegharot, which drops on the slopes of Mount Aragats at around 3,000 m above sea level. All of them are free to visit, and most are reachable as a day trip from Yerevan. The best season is April–June, when snowmelt gives the strongest flow; July through September the trails are drier and easier for hiking. Each page below lists exact coordinates, the distance from Yerevan, the trail difficulty, and what else to combine on the same route.

  • Kasakh Waterfall

The closest waterfall to Yerevan — a basalt‑canyon cascade directly opposite the 5th‑century Hovhannavank Monastery. Easy half‑day trip combining nature, geology and medieval architecture.

Ohanavan village, Aragatsotn Province 30–40 km from Yerevan 20 m
  • Gegharot Waterfall

The highest‑situated waterfall in Armenia — a 17 m cascade on Mount Aragats at 3,000 m elevation, with alpine meadows, an icy plunge basin and a classic approach route to Aragats’s North Peak.

Aragats village, Aragatsotn Province About 70 km from Yerevan + off-road section 17 m
  • Trchkan Waterfall

Trchkan Waterfall is the tallest vertical waterfall in Armenia — a 23-metre sheet of water dropping straight off…

Sarapat village, Shirak Province About 180 km / 2.5–3 hours (4x4 recommended for final approach) 23.5 m
  • Tours to Armenia's Waterfalls

Armenia's best waterfalls are hidden in mountain gorges and forest trails — gravel roads take you to the trailhead, and the closest public transport stop is often a few kilometres away. Without your own car, they are hard to reach.

The easiest way is to hire a car with driver from Yerevan: the driver covers the rough roads to Shaki near Sisian, the Jermuk cascades or Trchkan on the Shirak–Lori border, and waits while you walk. For waterfalls inside Dilijan National Park, it is convenient to combine the visit with the Yerevan–Dilijan transfer and a half-day in the forest.
