A Brief History of Dashtadem Fortress

The fortress stood near the caravan routes linking Dvin and Ani and helped protect this important connection. A surviving Arabic inscription records fortification work carried out in 1174. During the 13th and early 14th centuries, the castle served as one of the residences of the Zakaryan princely family.

The complex developed over several periods. An inner defensive wall surrounded the medieval citadel, while a larger outer enclosure with towers was added in 1812 on the orders of Huseyn Khan of Yerevan. Walking around the site reveals how these different layers of fortification fit together.

What to See at the Fortress

The centrepiece is the citadel, reinforced with projecting semicircular and polygonal towers. View it from several angles to appreciate the shape of the defences, small openings and variations in the stonework. Reddish volcanic tuff gives the central structures their distinctive colour.

Look at both the inner and outer defensive walls. Their arrangement helps explain how the fortress was protected: beyond the first enclosure lay another defended area containing the castle. Take time to explore the accessible courtyard rather than focusing only on the central tower.

A small palace church also stands within the complex. Archaeological excavations have revealed residential and service buildings, underground water reservoirs and parts of the water supply system. These remains show how Dashtadem supported everyday life as well as serving a defensive purpose.

Best Time to Visit

Choose a dry day in spring or autumn for a comfortable walk. In summer, mornings and late afternoons are better for avoiding the strongest sun. Low-angle light also brings out the shape of the towers and the texture of the stone walls, making these good times for photography.

Bring water, a sun hat and shoes with good grip. Use the paths and stairways open to visitors, taking the condition of the old structures into account. For a winter trip, check the weather and road conditions beforehand and plan your visit during daylight hours.
