History of Kayan Fortress
According to the construction inscription on the church, the fortress was built in 1233 by Bishop Hovhannes, the abbot of Haghpat Monastery. It provided refuge for the monastic community and a secure place for valuables during times of danger. Its elevated position allowed defenders to watch the approaches to Haghpat and the surrounding gorges.
The fortress suffered damage during the Mongol invasion in 1241. Later earthquakes caused further destruction, leaving the complex only partly preserved. Even so, the arrangement of its walls and buildings still shows how the natural cliffs formed part of the defensive system.
What to See at the Fortress
Start with the defensive walls and surviving towers. The stronghold stretches for approximately 120 metres along the rocky promontory and measures around 20 metres across at its widest point. Its elongated shape follows the terrain, making use of the narrow ground between the steep slopes.
Inside stands Surb Astvatsatsin, the Church of the Holy Mother of God, also known as Dsevank. This small domed building stands out among the ruins against the rocky landscape. Remains of other structures, water reservoirs and the water supply system can also be found within the fortress.
The panoramic views are another reason to make the climb. From the grounds, you can look across the surrounding gorges towards Haghpat and the Zarni-Parni cave-fortress complex. Take photographs from stable ground inside the site, keeping well back from cliff edges and damaged masonry.
How to Get to Kayan Fortress
From Yerevan, one route runs through Spitak and Vanadzor, then follows the M6 highway along the Debed River towards Alaverdi and the turn-off for Haghpat. Allow around 3–4 hours to reach the trailhead area, depending on your route and stops.
One of the main walking routes starts near the junction of the roads to Haghpat and Tsaghkashat and crosses the medieval Jraghatsadzor Bridge. The trail then follows the wooded slope towards the fortress, with rocky sections and steps closer to the destination. Return along the same path.
Mark the trailhead on your map before setting off: the fortress itself cannot be reached by car. If you are planning several stops in Lori, you can book a car with a driver from Yerevan and agree on the drop-off point, waiting time during your walk and the rest of the itinerary.
When to Visit and What to Bring
Choose a dry, clear day between spring and autumn. Spring brings green slopes, while autumn adds golden colours to Lori’s forests. After rain, the earth and stones along the trail can be slippery. Postpone the walk in snow, icy conditions or thick fog.
Bring shoes with a good grip, drinking water and a light jacket. Plan to return to the road before dark. Stay away from cliff edges and avoid climbing on ruined walls. If visiting with children, take particular care around exposed sections beside steep drops.
Other Stops for Your Trip
Combine the trip with Haghpat Monastery and Zarni-Parni Cave Complex. These attractions are in the same part of Lori, but each needs its own access arrangements and sightseeing time. Treat the walk to the fortress as one of the main activities of the day.
With more time, continue exploring the region in Alaverdi and visit Sanahin Monastery. If you are travelling from Yerevan and prefer a relaxed pace, an overnight stay in Lori allows you to spread the drive, monasteries and fortress walk over two days.
