What to See on Aragats and Around

The slopes of Mount Aragats and the road from Yerevan include a high-altitude lake, a medieval fortress, a mountain waterfall and several other interesting stops. The guides below provide detailed information about access, seasonality and practical planning.

How to Plan an Aragats Route

For a relaxed sightseeing trip without a summit hike, a convenient route is to stop first at the Armenian Alphabet Monument, continue to Amberd Fortress and then drive higher up the southern slope of Mount Aragats toward Lake Kari.

If Mount Aragats itself is the main purpose of the trip, avoid overloading the day with too many additional stops. Lake Kari is one of the main starting points for mountain routes, and a full ascent requires separate planning for weather, fitness and hiking time.

Gegharot Waterfall is better treated as a separate hiking destination. Allow enough time for the walk and bring suitable footwear and mountain clothing rather than trying to fit it into an already full sightseeing programme.

Best Time to Visit

The most convenient period for visiting the higher parts of Mount Aragats is from late spring to early autumn. Even in summer, weather conditions can change quickly at altitude, and temperatures near Lake Kari and on the mountain are much lower than in Yerevan.

Access to Amberd Fortress and Lake Kari depends on mountain road conditions. Snow and ice can make the upper sections inaccessible during the colder months.

How to Get There from Yerevan

The main sights around Aragats are easiest to reach by car. Travel time and road conditions vary considerably depending on the destination: the Armenian Alphabet Monument lies at a much lower elevation, while the road to Amberd and especially Lake Kari climbs high onto the mountain.

Before leaving Yerevan, it is best to decide on the main purpose of the trip — sightseeing, a drive to Lake Kari or a full mountain hike.
