Why Visit Saint Gayane Church?
The church was built under Catholicos Ezra I. According to church tradition, it stands at a site associated with the martyrdom of Saint Gayane. Her tomb lies beneath the sanctuary and is an important place of pilgrimage.
Its design combines the long interior of a basilica with a central dome. Take time to look at the proportions of the building from outside, then step inside to see the stone pillars and vaulted ceilings.
What to See During Your Visit

Start by walking around the church to view the dome, stone façades and arched gallery at the western entrance. The gallery was added later and served as a burial place for Armenian Catholicoses.
Inside, look for the four pillars supporting the dome and the sanctuary at the eastern end. If the tomb chamber is open to visitors, you can visit it too. Allow extra time if a service is taking place, and avoid disturbing worshippers.

This is an active church. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, speak quietly and ask before taking photographs inside.
When to Visit
We recommend spring or autumn for walking around the grounds and combining the church with other stops in town. In summer, a morning visit helps you avoid the midday heat.
You can also include the church in a winter itinerary, but bring warm clothing for walks between sights. Plan to visit during the day if you want to see the interior, and check access in advance if you intend to arrive early or late.
How to Get to Saint Gayane Church
The church is south of Etchmiadzin Cathedral. If you are already in the town centre, you can walk there; search for Saint Gayane Church on your map.
From Yerevan, you can travel to Etchmiadzin by car, taxi or public transport, then continue to the church on foot. If using public transport, check the departure point and return service before setting off.
To visit several churches and Zvartnots on the same trip, you can arrange a private car with a driver and agree on the stops in advance. Find more places to visit in our Etchmiadzin guide.
