Hnevank Monastery
Hnevank is a medieval monastery complex in Lori Province, hidden deep in the scenic gorge of the Dzoraget River near Kurtan village. Compared with Armenia’s better-known monasteries, it receives far fewer visitors and retains a quiet, secluded atmosphere.
The main appeal of Hnevank is the combination of medieval architecture and the surrounding landscape. The monastery stands above the river among the green slopes of Lori, while the journey into the gorge is part of the experience itself.

Where Is Hnevank Monastery?
Hnevank is located on the right bank of the Dzoraget River, east of Kurtan village. The monastery occupies an elevated position inside a deep gorge surrounded by the rugged landscapes of northern Armenia.
Stepanavan is the nearest convenient tourist base. From there, a visit to Hnevank can be combined with other historic and natural attractions in the northern part of Lori Province.
History of Hnevank Monastery
The history of Hnevank stretches across several centuries. The earliest structures are associated with the early medieval period, while much of the complex visible today reflects major rebuilding and development during the 12th century.
In the 12th century, the monastery was significantly renovated under Prince Smbat Orbelian. A Georgian inscription on the drum of the main church is one of the most interesting surviving details connected with this period.
Over time, parts of the monastery were damaged or fell into ruin. Restoration work was later carried out, including reconstruction of the dome of the main church.
What to See at Hnevank
The main monument is the medieval church with its high drum and restored dome. Even without studying the architectural details, the building is striking because of the way it rises above the narrow gorge and surrounding mountains.
A gavit and remains of other monastery buildings can also be seen around the church. It is worth walking around the complex, as several open viewpoints offer attractive views over the gorge and the Dzoraget valley.
Hnevank is memorable not because of a large number of separate monuments, but because of the atmosphere of the site as a whole. The architecture and landscape are best experienced together, so allow time for a short walk around the monastery after seeing the church.
Best Time to Visit Hnevank
The most convenient time to visit is from late spring to mid-autumn. The slopes of the gorge are especially green in spring and early summer, while autumn brings changing colours to the forests and mountains of Lori.
Winter access can be more difficult because of snow, ice and the condition of the final section of road. After heavy rain, it is also worth checking local road conditions before setting out.
How to Get to Hnevank Monastery
Hnevank is usually reached via the Stepanavan area and Kurtan village. The final part of the journey follows local roads toward the Dzoraget Gorge, so travel time depends not only on distance but also on road conditions.
In dry weather, reaching the monastery is considerably easier. After rain, snow or spring thaw, however, some sections may be inconvenient for a standard passenger car, so it is useful to check conditions before travelling independently.
The area is also attractive for hikers. Trails around Kurtan and the Dzoraget Gorge make it possible to combine a visit to Hnevank with a longer walk through the landscapes of Lori.
Hnevank in a Stepanavan Itinerary
A trip to Hnevank can easily be combined with Stepanavan and the surrounding area. One of the region’s main historic attractions is Lori Berd Fortress, set above deep river gorges near the town.
