Debed Canyon
Debed Canyon is a deep mountain valley in northern Armenia. The Debed River and the main road through Lori Province run along the canyon floor. Rocky cliffs, forested slopes and small settlements create a landscape noticeably different from Armenia’s drier central and southern regions.

Rather than a single attraction or viewpoint, the canyon is a whole travel destination. The monasteries of Kobayr, Odzun, Sanahin and Haghpat stand on the slopes and plateaus above it, while Alaverdi is the main town in this part of Lori.
The main sites can be visited on a day trip from Yerevan. However, the journey takes up much of the day, so an overnight stay is a better option if you want a slower route, short walks and time for less accessible places.
Nature and Landscapes of Debed Canyon
The Debed River forms where the Pambak and Dzoraget rivers meet near Dsegh, then flows north towards the Georgian border. Between Tumanyan and Alaverdi, the valley becomes especially narrow, with the surrounding slopes rising up to about 350 metres above the canyon floor.
The river, main road and railway line run through the bottom of the canyon. Above them are rocky walls, forested slopes and plateaus dotted with old villages. Narrow sections alternate with wider valleys and panoramic views of the Lori mountains.
Some of the best views are found on the higher ground near Odzun, Haghpat, Sanahin and Dsegh rather than along the main road. The slopes are especially green in late spring, while September and October bring yellow, red and golden autumn colours.
How to Get to Debed Canyon
The distance from Yerevan to different parts of the canyon is approximately 160–180 km. Driving to Alaverdi takes around 2.5–3 hours via Ashtarak, Spitak and Vanadzor. From Vanadzor, the route continues north along the M6 highway beside the Debed River. The road is paved, but there are many bends through the mountain sections.
Public transport connects Yerevan with Vanadzor and Alaverdi. However, the monasteries, villages and viewpoints are located on different slopes and plateaus, so taxis or other transport will still be needed between them. This option is more suitable for travellers staying in Lori Province for several days.
For a day trip, the most convenient options are a private car, a car with a driver or a transfer to Alaverdi. This gives you more flexibility to choose the stops and plan the route without depending on local transport.
Where to Stay in Debed Canyon
Alaverdi is the most convenient base for an overnight stay, especially if you are travelling without your own car. From here, it is easy to continue towards the main sites in the northern part of the canyon. Quieter guesthouses can also be found in Haghpat, Odzun and Dsegh. Check the exact location before booking, as some properties are on plateaus or in villages away from the main road.
What to Know Before You Go
- Wear comfortable shoes with non-slip soles for walks and the uphill trail to Kobayr Monastery.
- Bring a light jacket even in summer, as the plateaus and shaded parts of the canyon can be cooler than Yerevan.
- Save the route and important locations offline because mobile reception may weaken in narrow sections of the canyon.
- Carry water and snacks, and refuel in Vanadzor or Alaverdi before travelling to more remote stops.
