Areni and Noravank
Areni and Noravank form a scenic route through Vayots Dzor, combining local winemaking traditions, archaeological discoveries and the mountain landscapes of southern Armenia. The itinerary usually includes Areni village, Areni-1 Cave and Noravank Monastery, set among the red cliffs of Amaghu Gorge.

Areni is around 120 km from Yerevan, while Noravank is approximately 10 km from the village. Allow a full day for the journey, especially if you plan to visit a winery, explore the cave, stop for lunch and see the monastery at a relaxed pace.
How to Plan the Areni–Noravank Route
From Yerevan, the route is easiest to follow in this order:
- Areni village — stop at a winery and discover the region’s local wines, allowing around 45–60 minutes.
- Areni-1 Cave — approximately 30–45 minutes to explore the archaeological site.
- Noravank Monastery — about one hour to walk around the complex and enjoy the views of Amaghu Gorge.
Khor Virap Monastery can be added before Areni if you have enough time. Including the drive, sightseeing stops and lunch, the full journey from Yerevan takes approximately 7–8 hours.
How to Get There from Yerevan
The easiest way to travel is by car, taxi or a car with a driver. The journey from Yerevan to Areni takes around 2–2.5 hours, followed by another 10 km to Noravank. The final section passes through the scenic Amaghu Gorge.
Public transport can take you to Areni, but it does not connect all the stops on the route. Additional taxis will be needed to visit Areni-1 Cave and Noravank Monastery.
Best Time to Visit Areni and Noravank
The best time for this route is from April to October. Spring and early autumn offer comfortable temperatures for walking through the gorge and exploring the monastery, while September and October also coincide with the grape harvest season in Areni.
July and August can be hot, so it is better to leave Yerevan in the morning. The route is also accessible in winter, but check the weather and the road conditions towards Noravank before travelling.
What to Know Before You Go
- Wear comfortable shoes for Areni-1 Cave and the monastery grounds, where some paths have uneven stones and steps.
- In summer, bring water, a hat and sun protection because there is very little shade around Noravank.
- Check the opening hours of Areni-1 Cave and your chosen winery before travelling. Some wine tastings require advance booking.
