Vardanants Square in Gyumri
Vardanants Square is the central square of Gyumri and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Major walking routes meet here, city events take place around the square, and several historic buildings, churches and monuments are concentrated in the surrounding area.
For visitors, the square is one of the best places to begin exploring Gyumri. From here, you can continue on foot into the Kumayri Historic District, discover the architecture of Old Gyumri and gradually reach other attractions in the city centre.

The Main Square of Gyumri
Vardanants Square lies in the heart of Gyumri and remains one of the city’s main public spaces. It brings together everyday city life and historic architecture, making it a popular meeting point for local residents and a natural starting place for visitors.
The spacious rectangular square is surrounded by the streets of central Gyumri. From different sides, visitors can see civic buildings, historic façades and the silhouettes of some of the city’s best-known churches, making the square a good introduction to the character of Gyumri.
History of Vardanants Square
The modern layout of the square took shape in the 1930s and is associated with the urban planning work of architect Alexander Tamanian. The surrounding city changed considerably in later decades, but the square retained its role as the main civic space in central Gyumri.
Today, the name of the square is connected with Vardan Mamikonian and the memory of the Armenian warriors of the Battle of Avarayr in 451. This historical theme is represented by the large monument standing at the centre of the square.
What to See in Vardanants Square
The main visual landmark is the equestrian monument to Vardan Mamikonian. Standing in the centre of the square, it is visible from many directions and provides a good viewpoint for taking in the surrounding architecture and photographing the centre of Gyumri.
Two of Gyumri’s best-known churches stand beside the square: Holy Saviour’s Church, also known as Surb Amenaprkich, and the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God, commonly known as Yot Verk or the Seven Wounds Church. The surrounding architectural ensemble also includes the city administration building and the October Cinema.
The square is best experienced as part of a walk through central Gyumri rather than as a single monument to visit quickly. Spend some time looking at the buildings from different sides before continuing into the historic streets of the Old Town.
Vardan Mamikonian Monument
The equestrian monument to Vardan Mamikonian occupies the central part of the square. Vardan Mamikonian was a 5th-century Armenian military leader and the central figure of the Battle of Avarayr, and the monument has become one of the main visual symbols of central Gyumri.
The monument was installed in 2008 and was created by sculptor Artush Papoyan. Today, it serves both as a historical symbol and as a familiar landmark and meeting point in the centre of the city.
Best Time to Visit Vardanants Square
Vardanants Square can be visited throughout the year. Spring and summer are convenient for longer walks around the city, autumn highlights the colours and textures of Gyumri’s stone architecture, while winter gives the central square a quieter atmosphere.
For photography, morning is a good choice when the centre is usually quieter, while late-afternoon light brings out the texture of the surrounding tuff buildings. Around an hour is normally enough for the square itself unless you also plan to visit the nearby churches, museums or cafés.
Vardanants Square in a Gyumri Itinerary
Vardanants Square is an ideal starting point for a walk through Gyumri. From here, continue into the Kumayri Historic District, where old houses of black and red tuff, wooden balconies, courtyards and the architecture of 19th-century Alexandropol have been preserved.
After exploring the historic centre, you can continue to the Black Fortress on the western side of Gyumri. This route combines the city’s central square and civilian architecture of Old Gyumri with the military architecture of the 19th century.
How to Get to Vardanants Square
Vardanants Square is located in the central part of Gyumri. If you are already staying in the city, it is easy to reach on foot or by car, while the surrounding historic centre is best explored on foot.
Gyumri is about 120–125 km from Yerevan, and the drive usually takes around two hours. If you only need private transportation between the two cities without a sightseeing programme, you can arrange a Yerevan to Gyumri transfer in advance.
