Transport in Armenia ranges from Yerevan’s metro, buses and taxis to intercity minibuses, trains and private cars with drivers.
Central Yerevan is easy to explore on foot, while public transport and ride-hailing apps cover longer journeys around the city. Travelling between regions requires more planning because many monasteries, viewpoints and mountain attractions are located away from regular bus routes.

Public Transport in Yerevan
Yerevan has a metro, buses and trolleybuses. The metro has one main line and is particularly useful for avoiding traffic between the railway station, Republic Square, the city centre and the northern districts.
Buses and trolleybuses cover a much larger area. Stops and route information are not always obvious to first-time visitors, so it is useful to check the route before boarding.

Cash is not accepted on regular Yerevan buses, trolleybuses or the metro. Depending on the ticket, payment can be made with a transport card, a compatible contactless bank card or a ticket purchased through the TelCell system.
Visitors staying for several days may find a transport card or day ticket more convenient than purchasing separate journeys. Always validate the card or ticket when entering the vehicle or metro.
Taxis in Yerevan
App-based taxis are convenient and usually inexpensive in Yerevan. Yandex Go and the Armenian gg app are commonly used. The estimated fare is shown before the journey, and the route can be followed in the app.
Check the vehicle registration number before getting in. If you take a taxi without an app, agree on the total price before the journey begins. Avoid accepting unsolicited rides from drivers inside airport and railway-station arrival areas.
Getting from Zvartnots Airport to Yerevan
Zvartnots International Airport is approximately 12 km from central Yerevan. The journey usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.
The main options are:
- Bus 100: operates between the airport and central Yerevan. The fare is 500 AMD. It runs every 30 minutes during the day and approximately once an hour overnight. Payment is available by QR ticket or compatible Visa or Mastercard.
- Bus 201: runs approximately every 30 minutes from 07:00 until 22:00. The fare is 300 AMD and is paid in cash in Armenian drams.
- App-based taxi: convenient if you have mobile internet and can locate the designated pickup point.
- Pre-booked transfer: the driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you directly to your hotel or apartment.
A private transfer is particularly convenient at night, with children, several suitcases or a larger group.
Intercity Buses, Minibuses and Trains
Buses and shared minibuses connect Yerevan with Gyumri, Dilijan, Vanadzor, Sevan, Goris and other towns. They are usually the cheapest way to travel between cities.
Services depart from different stations depending on the route. Timetables may change, seats are not always reservable and luggage space can be limited. Carry some Armenian drams because card payment may not be available.
The railway network is smaller. The Yerevan–Gyumri route is the most useful domestic train service for visitors. Seasonal trains may also operate towards Sevan and Shorzha in summer. Trains are comfortable and inexpensive but usually less frequent than buses.
Public transport normally reaches the nearest town rather than an individual monastery or viewpoint, so an additional taxi may be required.
Self-Drive Rental or Car with a Driver?
A self-drive rental provides complete freedom, but mountain roads, winter weather, unfamiliar traffic and limited mobile coverage can make driving demanding. Confirm the licence, insurance and cross-border conditions with the rental company before collecting the vehicle.
A car with a driver is easier for day trips and multi-stop routes. The driver handles navigation, parking and road conditions while you choose the places and amount of time spent at each stop.
This format works especially well for Garni and Geghard, Lake Sevan, Khor Virap, Noravank, Dilijan and longer journeys towards Tatev or Jermuk.
