Zarni-Parni Cave Complex

Zarni-Parni is a cave-fortress complex near Haghpat village in Armenia’s Lori Province. Natural rock cavities are enclosed by stone defensive walls, with a tower and rooms built into the setting. Surrounded by the wooded slopes of Debed Canyon, the complex offers views towards Kayan Fortress across the gorge.

Visitors come to explore the fortified caves, see the small museum collection and enjoy the mountain scenery. A visit combines easily with nearby Haghpat Monastery, bringing together two different aspects of Lori’s past: medieval monastic architecture and a fortified refuge beneath the cliffs.

Quick Facts

  • Location: near Haghpat village, Lori Province
  • From Yerevan: 3–4 hours
  • Best time to visit: the warmer months

The Caves and History of Zarni-Parni

The complex’s defining feature is the use of natural caves as protected spaces. Defensive walls were built across the rock openings, enclosing the interiors and securing the entrances. The lower cave, Zarni Ayr, is the larger of the two; steps lead up towards Parni Ayr above it.

The site’s history is closely connected with Haghpat Monastery. According to local tradition, people sheltered in the caves during raids, and monastic manuscripts were hidden here for safekeeping. One of the caves is also associated with the medieval scholar Hovhannes Imastaser. Following clearance and restoration work, the complex opened to visitors.

What to See at the Complex

Start with the defensive wall and the entrance to the lower cave. Here, you can see how the stonework follows and complements the natural cliff. Inside, look at the space beneath the rock ceiling and the dripping spring, where water filters through the stone and collects in stone basins.

The museum collection includes old farming tools, vessels and household objects. These exhibits introduce aspects of everyday life in Lori, from agriculture and crafts to domestic work. It is a small collection that fits naturally into a walk through the cave complex.

The views of the wooded gorge and Kayan Fortress are another reason to stop. Leave time for photographs from the accessible viewpoints. A restaurant area beside the caves also makes it possible to extend your visit and combine sightseeing with lunch.

Best Time to Visit

For a comfortable walk, choose a dry day during the warmer months. The surrounding slopes are green in late spring and summer, while autumn brings golden colours to Lori’s forests. Confirm that the complex is open before travelling, particularly outside the main visitor season and in winter.

Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip, as the grounds include steps and uneven surfaces. We recommend allowing about an hour to explore, with extra time for the approach walk, photographs and lunch.

How to Get to Zarni-Parni from Yerevan

From Yerevan, one route runs through Spitak and Vanadzor, then follows the M6 highway along the Debed River towards Alaverdi. Leave the main road for the climb towards Haghpat, then take the turn-off for the cave complex. Search for Zarni-Parni in your navigation app: the caves and Haghpat Monastery are separate stops.

A separate access road leads approximately one kilometre from the Haghpat road to the complex. Check whether this final stretch is suitable for your vehicle and allow time to walk if needed. For a trip with several sightseeing stops, you can book a car with a driver from Yerevan and agree on the route in advance.

Other Stops for Your Day Trip

The closest natural addition to your itinerary is Haghpat Monastery. Visit it before or after the caves, allowing enough time for both stops. Kayan Fortress, visible from the complex, requires a separately planned walk: seeing it across the gorge does not mean there is a quick route directly to it.

With a full day available, you can also include Sanahin Monastery and a stop in Alaverdi. For a more relaxed introduction to Debed Canyon, consider staying overnight in the area. This leaves time for smaller attractions and walks between the main sights.
