What to See in Kapan and Around

Kapan is a convenient base for exploring southern Syunik. Historic fortresses, mountain hiking routes and some of Armenia’s most remote natural areas are located around the city. The main places below have their own detailed guides with practical information for planning a visit.

Where Is Kapan?

Kapan is located in southern Armenia and serves as the administrative capital of Syunik Province. The city stretches along the Voghji River valley and is surrounded by steep forested and rocky slopes. Mount Khustup, one of the most recognisable peaks of southern Armenia, rises above the city.

Kapan is about 320 km from Yerevan. The journey takes most of the day, so the city is better used as a base for a longer trip through southern Armenia rather than as a short day trip from the capital.

History of Kapan

Kapan is one of the historic settlements of Syunik. It appears in Armenian written sources from the early Middle Ages and by the late 10th century became the capital of the Kingdom of Syunik. Its mountain setting and surrounding gorges provided natural protection.

The old settlement suffered heavily during the Seljuk invasions in the early 12th century. Another important chapter in the region’s history came in the 18th century during the Armenian liberation movement led by David Bek. Nearby Halidzor Fortress became one of his principal strongholds.

During the 20th century Kapan developed as an important industrial centre of southern Armenia. In older Russian and Soviet sources the city may also appear as Kafan or Ghapan.

Kapan City Center

Kapan looks noticeably different from many towns in central Armenia. Instead of spreading across a broad plateau, the city follows a narrow mountain valley, with streets and residential districts climbing the surrounding slopes.

In the centre, visitors can walk along the Voghji River, see the monument to David Bek and enjoy views of the mountains surrounding the city. On clear days, Mount Khustup dominates the skyline above Kapan.

Nature Around Kapan

Southern Syunik is one of Armenia’s greenest and most biologically diverse regions, with dense forests, deep gorges and large protected natural areas.

Kapan is a practical base for exploring this landscape. The headquarters of the Zangezur Biosphere Complex are located in the city. The organisation manages Shikahogh State Reserve, Arevik National Park and several protected sanctuaries, including the Khustup area.

Some protected areas have special access rules. Visitors planning hikes or routes inside reserves and restricted zones should check current conditions and access requirements in advance.

Best Time to Visit Kapan

For a general sightseeing trip, the most convenient period is from May to October.

  • May and June bring green mountain slopes, stronger rivers and waterfalls.
  • July and August are warm in the city, while mountain hikes such as Khustup are best started early in the morning.
  • September and October are particularly attractive for hiking and autumn landscapes.
  • Winter visits to Kapan are possible, but high-altitude routes become considerably more difficult.

If Mount Khustup or Lichk Waterfalls are the main purpose of the trip, conditions on the specific trail are more important than the weather in Kapan itself.

How to Get to Kapan from Yerevan

Kapan is approximately 320 km from Yerevan. By car, the journey usually takes around six hours without long stops.

The road passes through Vayots Dzor and Syunik, so Kapan works particularly well as part of a multi-day itinerary through southern Armenia.

For a longer route with several overnight stops and trips around Kapan, a car with driver from Yerevan can be a convenient option.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Mountain roads around Kapan can include unpaved sections.
  • Access to the higher slopes of Mount Khustup may require a high-clearance or 4×4 vehicle, especially after rain.
  • Mobile coverage can become unreliable on remote mountain routes.
  • Check current access rules before entering protected natural areas.
  • Mount Khustup and Lichk Waterfalls should normally be planned as separate trips rather than combined into one overloaded day.
